LOVE AND LOSS

TEARS, IDLE TEARS

List three adjectives that the speaker uses to describe the past and explain how the adjectives are different or similar. Briefly state the tone of the poem. What does the speaker believe is precious about the past?
- Dear as remembered kisses after death
-Sad as the last which reddens over one
- Fresh as the first beam glittering on a sail

-Do you think the speaker had a joyous or miserable past? Why?
I think the tone of the poem toward the past is the same as the adjectives describing it. The speaker believes the past is precious because it is fresh, sad, strange, dear, sweet, and deep. I think the speaker’s past was not completely joyous but it was not miserable, I think he is happy about the past he had and he misses it, like he would like to go back and enjoy what he enjoyed again.

THE POWER OF NATURE

Close to the sun in lonely lands” (From The Eagle: A Fragment)
He is talking about how the eagle is so close to the sun, because it lives at the top of the mountains, yet it lives by itself and in loneliness.
“(If) I could understand what you are… I should know what God and man is” (From Flower in the Crannied Wall)
The author refers to how he believes that if he gets to understand a flower, a plant, then he will be able to understand humanity.
What is the speaker’s attitude toward nature in each poem?
The authors attitude toward nature is that he admires it. He is dazzled by it and he hopes to find answers to his questions by understanding nature.
In what ways are the two poems different?
On both poems each one of them has a different tone on Tears Idle Tears the author thinks that the past is precious and on the other hand on The power of Nature the authors admires the nature, something totally different from the first poem. But still both talk about nature, but one is about an animal and other one is about a plant.

SHATTERING GLASS

After reading “
The Lady of Shalott“, what associations do you have with the following words from the poem? Use words, symbols or images to communicate the ideas or emotions you associate with each of the following poem.
Explain the meaning of the above words in the context of the poem
All of them are the reflect of a person, in this case Lady of Shallot.

Why do you think the Lady of Shalott becomes “half sick” of the shadows she sees in the mirror?
because she is seing like herself but in other position and then she starts thinking why this things happends, so that is why half sick… by looking to a mirror you obviously see yourself… so you can say its  your other half. So thats why it says half sick, her other half of the soul we can say.
